A special invitation for those who have experienced homelessness

Speak Up exists to give a voice to the poor and powerless.

If you are a “street writer” who has experienced homelessness, the community needs to read your story! Please consider responding to this opportunity speak up for yourself personally, to fight against destructive stereotypes and write in a way that moves hearts and creates community.

Own Your Story

Your story is totally unique. Write for Speak Up and…speak up! Starting in June 2016, “street writers” will be paid $25 per published piece. Submit to write@speakupmag.org. See guidelines above.

Empowerment Opportunity

Do you have a passion for work and entrepreneurship? Speak Up’s “vendor” opportunity may be for you. It is real work (begging for coins is far easier) but it comes with tremendous dignity. Call 704-980-9885 to schedule an interview.

Need assistance with housing, medical and other social services? If you are in Charlotte, NC, we recommend the Urban Ministry Center and their comprehensive suite of services. (urbanministrycenter.org)

We pay upon publication, and can disburse funds via Paypal, check, money order or cash.

If you are paid in excess of $600 for writing or art in a single year, Speak Up will issue a 1099 for work as an independent contractor.

In an effort to support your most positive journey forward, we will not make in-person payments if you appear intoxicated or under the influence drugs. (Monies will instead be sent to an approved mailing address.)
