Write Together and Bridge Divides

Outrage-amplifying algorithms, media siloes, and crumbling social institutions have created a sense of Perpetual Division. We’re afflicted by online polarization, false connections, and a haunting sense that we’re careening away from one another and it will only get worse. It happens with strangers on the internet, in our work and communities, and even in our own families.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

In Speak Up writing groups, people come together across so-called impassable chasms—homeless versus non-homeless, this race versus that race, left versus right, my way versus your way—and do the deeply human work of creating, writing, sharing together.

It’s simple. It’s fundamental. And has never been more necessary.

It began as a project for people facing homelessness but developed into something far better: a space for everyone.

We’ve Been Around Since 2011

There’s a lot more to Speak Up. We’re a 501(c)(3) Public Charity that began as a printed magazine designed to empower people facing homelessness.

We published 90 print issues, served hundreds of people on the streets, inspired tens of thousands of readers, and won international acclaim. More than once.
